Pro Bono Sewage Crawlspace Cleanup for Disabled Veteran in Conway, SC

May 17, 2026

Too Long, Didn't Read

Restoration 1 of Horry County recently helped a disabled veteran in Conway, SC by completing a severe crawlspace sewage cleanup completely free of charge after learning the homeowner’s insurance would not cover the loss. A broken drain line had leaked raw sewage beneath the home for months, creating dangerous Category 3 contamination, strong odors, and health risks. The team safely removed contaminated materials, disinfected the crawlspace, applied odor-control treatments, and helped prevent further damage while plumbing repairs were arranged — giving the homeowner relief and support during an overwhelming situation.

Restoration 1 of Horry County recently received a call from a local insurance agent regarding a disabled veteran in Conway, South Carolina who desperately needed help with a severe sewage issue beneath their home.

Unfortunately, the homeowner’s insurance policy did not provide coverage for the loss, and the customer did not have the financial resources to handle the cleanup. Knowing the situation, the insurance agent reached out to our team to ask if there was any way we could assist and provide services at a greatly reduced cost.

After learning more about the homeowner’s circumstances, Restoration 1 of Horry County decided to complete the sewage cleanup project completely pro bono.

The issue was caused by a broken drain line beneath the home that had been leaking raw sewage into the crawlspace for an estimated four months. Over time, the contamination spread throughout portions of the crawlspace, creating strong odors and serious health concerns inside and beneath the home.

The homeowner had noticed a worsening odor inside the property for quite some time but did not realize the source of the problem until further investigation revealed the failed drain line and sewage contamination beneath the structure.

Because raw sewage is classified as Category 3 water — the most hazardous category of water damage — the cleanup required specialized safety procedures and professional remediation techniques. Raw sewage can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and pathogens including E. coli, Salmonella, Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Giardia, and other dangerous microbial contaminants that can pose serious health risks to occupants.

Due to the hazardous conditions, our team entered the crawlspace wearing heavy-duty personal protective equipment (PPE) including full-body protective suits, respirators, gloves, and protective eye coverings.

Our crew manually removed contaminated sewage materials and affected soil from the crawlspace before thoroughly disinfecting and treating the affected areas with professional antimicrobial solutions designed for sewage remediation and odor control.

To help reduce additional contamination while awaiting permanent plumbing repairs, our team also dug a temporary trench beneath portions of the crawlspace to help divert any new sewage intrusion until the damaged drain line could be repaired by a licensed plumber.

As part of the remediation process, lime was also applied within the crawlspace to assist with odor reduction and sanitation efforts.

The homeowner was understandably embarrassed and overwhelmed by the situation, especially after dealing with the odor and unknown sewage leak for several months. However, they were extremely grateful for the compassion, professionalism, and support shown by everyone involved in the project.

At Restoration 1 of Horry County, we understand that some situations go beyond restoration work. While we handle water damage, mold remediation, sewage cleanup, and crawlspace restoration throughout Conway, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and surrounding areas every day, this project was an opportunity to help a local veteran in need and give back to the community we serve.
