About Restoration 1 of Western Wayne County
Since its inception, owner Chris Kushmaul has led Restoration 1 of Western Wayne County for close to four years. Growing up in the heart of Metro Detroit, Chris knows the area like the back of his hand. A true local at heart, Chris went to school in Ann Arbor, bought his first house in Westland, and his son was born at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
As a veteran himself, Chris says that owning his own restoration company reminds him of being in the military. Together with his team, they thrive in the ever-changing and fast-paced environment. "Every day is different when providing emergency services," says Chris.
At Restoration 1 of Western Wayne County, each technician undergoes extensive and ongoing education. "We have a progression of formal training and on-the-job experience to be a certified technician. All of our Western Wayne technicians start with an online training orientation where they learn the basics of water damage and the science of drying. As new technicians experience the day-to-day services we provide, they are given more and more responsibilities on the job site while being supervised. Once a level of proficiency is achieved, we send the technicians to IICRC-certified courses to earn their certifications. Using that knowledge and experience in the field is where it all comes together!"
On top of extensive training, the technicians (including Chris) also receive various additional certifications within the restoration field. "Our favorite is Reets Drying Academy just outside Atlanta. Reets has some of the industry's best instructors with a flood house to apply the learnings with hands-on experience. All of our technicians have completed the WTR/ASD combo certification course–both are must-have certifications."
Another string to their bow, Restoration 1 of Western Wayne County also belongs to Plymouth, Canton, and Belleville Chambers. In addition, Chris is an ambassador to the Plymouth Chamber and has also just become a board member with Plymouth last month. "I am really enjoying the experience!" Chris says.
When asked about a recent challenging job, Chris says, "In the last 12 months, we have completed three smoke/fire mitigations for businesses in the Metro Detroit area. They were all extremely challenging! There is an urgency to get the job done right so that the company can safely reopen. There were so many moving parts to the projects with a good amount of pressure. We loved the challenge and made sure the customers were 100% satisfied with our work."
On top of helping residents and property owners, Restoration 1 of Western Wayne County also gives back to their community. "Currently, the entire team consists of military veterans, so veterans in need are close to our heart," says Chris. Restoration 1's second job was for a disabled Vietnam veteran. When his insurance company denied his claim, the team performed the work free of charge, cleaning up sewage from his basement and completely drying it out. "As veterans, we find a way to help each other," says Chris.
When Chris is not helping Metro Detroit with property damage, you can find him and his family at the city’s events, festivals, and art fairs. When it's time for a much-deserved break, Chris and his family will head up North on vacation in the Traverse City area. "We find a beautiful Airbnb and enjoy a week of what Northern Michigan has to offer. It is just unbelievably beautiful."
