As long as these areas are contained and in good condition, there is no need to worry. Asbestos is only a concern when the particles become airborne. It is very difficult for a layperson to identify asbestos. You will need one of our Restoration 1 owners or technicians to determine if you are dealing with asbestos or not.

Types of Asbestos

These are six types of asbestos in naturally occurring minerals. It is made up of fiber bundles that can separate into long fibers. The six types of asbestos are listed below:

Actinolite:

It is dark green and fibrous and can be found in paints and sealants.

Chrysotile:

This is the most common and, unfortunately, the most dangerous. It accounts for about 90% of commercial asbestos. It is white and curly.

Amosite:

It has straight fibers with brown colors and is mainly found in insulation.

Crocidolite:

This is blue with straight fibers and is considered the most dangerous form of asbestos.

Anthophyllite:

This type of asbestos can be found in talc. It is usually white, gray, or brown.

Tremolite:

This type of asbestos can be gray, white, green, or brown. It is usually combined with Chrysotile and used in talc.

Current EPA Guidelines for Dealing with Asbestos

If the area or material is not damaged, do not touch it. Leave it alone. Any movement could cause the particles to be released into the air.
Encapsulation is an option. Your local Restoration 1 company is trained in encapsulation or sealing the surface of the materials to keep them from becoming airborne. This is not something an owner should do by themselves. This process works for material that is in good condition. Material in bad condition must follow recommendation number 3.
Full enclosure or cover of the asbestos material is recommended for material that has begun to deteriorate. Once again, a trained and licensed Restoration 1 expert should complete this for you.

Current EPA Guidelines for Removal of Asbestos

Protection of the worker during the removal process. This can include the following:

PPE or respiratory for protection from breathing in the asbestos particles.
Wear as much disposable clothing as possible.
Make sure to cover all areas of your body. Use gloves, goggles, boots etc.

While you are working with asbestos, remember to:

Enclose the area properly and do now allow other people to enter.
Dampen the material to ensure particles don't get airborne. You can use water with some dish soap for this.
IF possible, remove the asbestos as one whole piece. This also helps prevent particles from becoming airborne.
The use of a HEPA approved vacuum cleaner is recommended if needed.
Make sure to dispose of the asbestos in large bags immediately.
Make sure to always have your gloves on.

Cleanup and Decontamination:

Double bag the asbestos as best you can and seal it tightly.
Do not use a sweeper or vacuum cleaner.
Use a damp rag or mop to collect all loose particles on the walls or on the floors.
When you leave the area, remove all your disposable gloves, boots, and clothes and place in a bag and seal tightly.
Take a shower immediately.

Disposal of Asbestos:

You must follow your state EPA guidelines for removal of the asbestos; not all landfills will take it. You should call the landfill first and follow their instructions.
